LANSING, Mich. (Great Lakes News) – Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is the third member of her administration to travel out of state amid rising COVID-19 cases and her pleas for Michiganders to stay home.
Whitmer’s office originally told our media partners at MIRS that the governor traveled to Florida to visit her ailing father. Then her office backtracked and would not confirm if Whitmer went to Florida but only confirmed that she traveled out of state.
A Whitmer spokeswoman said, “[Whitmer’s] dad was fully vaccinated, and the governor is tested regularly and has never tested positive for COVID.”
On Sunday’s Meet the Press, Governor Gretchen Whitmer fielded a questions regarding what will stop Michigan’s COVID-19 surge. Whitmer said. “This is going to come down to whether or not everyone does their part. That’s the most important thing.”
The news of Whitmer’s travels come as reports surfaced of two top aides vacationing out of state. Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Director Elizabeth Hertel spent a week in Alabama with her family. Trish Foster, the COO in charge of rolling out the vaccine in Michigan went to Florida and posted pictures on Facebook while her high school son recovered from COVID-19 at home.
