LANSING, Mich. (Great Lakes News) – Gov. Gretchen Whitmer doesn’t appear to understand why her recent trip to Florida angered Michiganders.
After blaming Michigan residents for contributing to the COVID-19 surge by “letting down their guard” and traveling to Florida for spring break, Gov. Whitmer appeared baffled by the backlash over her own trip to The Sunshine State.
Whitmer told the Washington Post, “I wasn’t out partying in Miami. I think unfortunately in this environment, it seems like people are more focused on scoring political points than actually doing the work to keep people safe.”
Whitmer’s office told the press she visited her sick father. That is something Whitmer prevented Michiganders from doing for months while she continued to institute lockdown orders, further isolating nursing home patients and prohibiting them from meeting with visitors.
The news of Whitmer’s trip comes on the heels of two top aides taking trips down south during the same time their boss ordered the rest of the state to stay home. Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Director (MDHHS) Elizabeth Hertel traveled to Alabama with her family for spring break. Her office said she “remained available” to enforce MDHHS orders issued on behalf of Whitmer.
Trish Foster, Whitmer’s COO in charge of rolling out the vaccine in Michigan, vacationed in Florida with several teenagers while her high school son recovered from COVID-19 at home.
