LANSING, Mich. (Great Lakes News) – Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is being recognized by the White House.

President Joe Biden appointed Whitmer on Thursday to the Council of Governors.

The council is meant to be a bipartisan group that addresses homeland security and disaster response, along with other safety and security issues.

The Council of Governors, formed in 2008, is comprised of 10 Governors. Five are Republicans and Five are Democrats.

Governor Whitmer says she welcomes the opportunity to make difference in the lives of Americans.

Biden passed over Whitmer for the vice president nomination last summer, saying he would prefer a person of color or a woman. Biden picked Kamala Harris.

At home, Gov. Whitmer faces dropping poll numbers amid her handling of the COVID-19 pandemic along with perceived hypocrisies among her and her administration.

In May, a photo of Whitmer and friends appeared on social media which showed the governor violating her own orders at the Landshark in East Lansing.

Whitmer’s “MI Shot to Win Sweepstakes” which she announced last week has garnered 1 million entries, but has not significantly increased vaccine totals as hoped.
