MIDLAND, Mich. (Great Lakes News) – Federal regulators released a preliminary report which provides some insight into what caused two dams to burst last year near Midland.

The report says soil collapsing under waterlogged conditions likely caused the Edenville and Sanford dams to collapse in May 2020, flooding the areas.

The flooding forced roughly 10,000 people to evacuate.

The preliminary report says it still needs to evaluate any human factors that may have been involved.  Regulators plan to release a final report.
