FLINT, Mich. (Great Lakes News) –  A fire at the historic Genesee County Courthouse over the weekend has forced its closure to the public through at least Wednesday.

According to the Genesee County Board of Commissioners, crews contained the fire to the second floor, which houses the clerk’s office along with vital records.

Officials said the fire damaged a good portion of the area, while the sprinkler system added to the total damage.

Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton said courthouse employees should return to work sometime this week, but he’s not sure when circuit court cases will resume.
