LANSING, Mich. (Great Lakes News) – Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has repeatedly said she will not institute a statewide mask mandate again in Michigan, but she’s giving accolades to county health departments for doing the same.

Last October after the Michigan Supreme Court struct down a 1945 emergency powers law Whitmer used as the basis of her COVID-19 executive orders, she implemented an obscure 1918 Spanish influenza law. In essence, it sidestepped the Supreme Court and moved her executive order powers behind the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS). It remains in effect.
Whitmer is facing a slew of Republican challengers looking to oust her from the governor’s mansion in 2022.
