Business owners on Mackinac Island said a dip in domestic and foreign travel during 2020 seemed to drive this year’s success.

While the island was open in 2020, crowds remained small. The closure of the land border between the U.S. and Canada also stopped potential customers from traveling to the island.

However, 2021 exceeded 2019 hotel reservations, retail sales, and bar activity.

In addition, more people traveled from surrounding states.
